I think I am going to take a lot of hate for this post from both the communities but hey, its an interesting read and I am just the delivery boy. Here it goes.
According to ABI research team, a shift has taken place in the global tablet market from iOS to Android. Now lets get to the facts, shall we ?
ABI research team notes that the price of the iPads have fallen by almost 17% in the last 12 months while the price of the android tablets have gone up by 17%. Since the iPad’s average selling price is moving closer to the market average, ABI Research believes that this is a sign that Apple is losing its leadership position.
“The 7.9-inch iPad mini represented about 60 percent of total iPad shipments and 49 percent of iPad-related device revenues in the quarter,” wrote ABI Research senior practice director Jeff Orr.
Jeff believes that the shift is taking place because Apple is no longer charging the premium price for its tablets that it once used to charge. Its moving towards the lower and more affordable segment now. Jeff however also notes that the shift could be because of the iPad mini which accounted for 60% of the number of iPad units sold in Q2 and made up 49% of iPad revenue. So looking at things from this perspective, it seems that the shift is actually towards a smaller sized screen in the form of iPad mini rather than lower priced iPads ?
Lets take a look at the numbers. In the second quarter of the year 2013, Android slates outsell the Apple iPad with 14.5 million iOS flavored slabs rung up in the three month period, compared to 30.5 million Android tablets sold in the same period.
However it should be noted that when we talk about this from a vendor’s point of view rather than an OS point of view, it should be noted that ABI research is taking into consideration all the vendors that are manufacturing and selling android tablets and not just one. Samsung who is the closet competitor to Apple is standing at a distant second position. According to data by IDC, Samsung only sold 8.1 million tablets in the second quarter of 2013.
Apple still remains the tablet brand by a huge margin and people recognize that. However Android is getting there and quickly.
So who do you think is winning the tablet war and why? Android or iOS ?
